Abstract

This paper discusses the status of the collaborative translation project in the Honam region over the past 15 years, including its achievements and areas for improvement. The project of the ‘Collaborative Translation Project of Regional Research Institutes,’ which began 15 years ago amid expectations and concerns, has now established a stable translation system. As for the positive cycle of translation personnel, the translation team at the Jeonju University has met the goal of virtuous the positive cycle, with over 50% of its members coming from the Jeonju branch of the Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics. However, it cannot be denied that the regional relevance of the Honam region (Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Jeju Island) is considerably lower compared to other regions, due to sharing the priority translation lists with the Central region. Therefore, it is essential to select regionally specialized texts for translation, aiming for about one out of three texts, based on the expertise of the regional translation institutes and the specific characteristics of the regions, in order to establish a solid foundation for translation research institutes based in the region. Currently, the main users of the translated collections of literary works are not the general public but rather specialized researchers and semi-researchers, highlighting the need to enhance academic value through scholarly translation. As a way to share translation results with the public, it is also necessary to promote secondary and tertiary translations based on primary translations, as well as to provide accessible explanations. Further, translations of the collections of literary works representing the region should shed new light on the historical figures and culture of the area.
