Abstract

This paper analyzes the intersection between discourses of regional depopulation and healing narratives in Yoshimoto Banana’s There Is No Lid on the Sea. The story is set in Nishiizu, Shizuoka Prefecture, a town on the verge of regional extinction. This work marks Yoshimoto’s first attempt to address the contemporary social issue of regional depopulation within her fiction. Through the protagonist Mari’s return to her hometown, the novel presents a form of self-realization and a mode of reconnecting with place that differs from state-led regional revitalization policies. However, neither Mari nor Hajime, a visitor from the city, approaches the problem of regional decline on a structural level. In particular, Hajime appropriates the region as a healing space from an urban-centered perspective. Thus, There Is No Lid on the Sea is significant as Yoshimoto’s first literary commitment with a contemporary social agenda, yet it also reveals the limitation of not fully developing that agenda beyond the realm of personal emotion.
