Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of narrative transportation and emotional engagement through films on memorization and recall in second language learning. For this study, the movie Coco(Unkrich & Molina, 2017) was selected as the learning material, and a case study was conducted with four adult participants majoring in English over a six-week period. Participants chose memorable expressions by connecting their personal experiences with the content of each scene and wrote weekly reports after each session. Data were collected through a final test and follow-up interviews. The findings of this study suggest the following: First, when learners are emotionally engaged in the narrative, conversations, and characters’ emotions—and relate them to their own experiences—language is perceived as a tool for communication and emotional expression. Second, this process contributes to deeper learning, enhancing the memorization and recall of expressions. This study demonstrates that emotional engagement and personal experience positively influence the learning of language expressions in foreign language education. The findings highlight the value of using narrative materials such as films to create emotionally resonant and experience-based learning environments. Furthermore, encouraging learners to autonomously select and share meaningful expressions can foster deeper internalization and sustained engagement.
