Abstract

Utilizing the correlation between emotional salience and episodic memory, this paper proposes a novel approach to teaching movie English in EFL classrooms. Eight undergraduate students—two at a low-intermediate level, one at an intermediate level, and five at a high-intermediate level of English proficiency—participated in the study. Two animated movies, Toy Story 4 for the low-intermediate and intermediate participants and Sing 2 for the high-intermediate participants, were used as materials. Participants were asked to select the most impactful scenes and explain their choices, focusing on the emotional salience they observed in those scenes. Analysis of their responses indicated that they preferred positive emotions to negative ones. Additionally, After seeing randomly selected discourses provided by the researcher, the participants were asked to recall and describe the scenes including those discourses in detail and explicitly mention the observed emotions. Most students recalled the scenes effectively, with the high-intermediate participants performing better than the low-intermediate and intermediate ones. Suggesting that learners with lower language proficiency face challenges when combining meaning and form, this finding highlights the need in this group for additional guidance and support from instructors. Moreover, all participants unanimously agreed on the positive correlation between emotional salience and episodic memory. However, the analysis indicated the participants responded positively to this method under one specific condition: when their favorite movies were used as learning materials. This study elucidates the potential benefits of integrating emotional salience into language learning through movies, indicating that this method could be effective in the classroom setting. It also makes suggestions regarding scene selection and areas that require teacher guidance.
