Abstract

The Battle of Osan-Taejon is a operational history of the 24th Infantry Division, the first UN force to be deployed in the Korean War. As a result of finding and verifying various new materials that had been difficult to access previously due to confidentiality, we were able to identify errors in six parts of the content and misspellings of the names of 16 soldiers. The analysis revealed that, with the exception of one instance attributed to a translation error, the remaining five inaccuracies were errors produced solely within domestic literature, diverging from the original sources. Some of these errors were subsequently reproduced in later publications. In the case of the Supply evacuation operation, the error could have been identified and corrected early on, yet it persisted and was repeatedly reproduced due to its derivative presence in related accounts. Certain errors further expanded into narrative forms, influencing the formation of social memory—as seen in Supply evacuation operation and in the account of Lieutenant Bixler and His platoon. Bibliographic analysis also confirmed that name misspellings, when originating in the original sources, were uncritically reproduced in later literature. In conclusion, the errors identified in The Battle of Osan-Taejon stem from the limitations of oral history and the process of adapting foreign texts into Korean historiography. These inaccuracies exhibit a tendency toward expansion and reproduction, and name misspellings, in particular, not only undermine individual dignity but also constitute structural flaws within digital environments. Therefore, battle history must be subject to continuous critical review, and the correction of errors should be pursued not merely as factual revision, but as a academic and public responsibility.
