Abstract
The Reformation of the Church of England in the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century was not a replacement of the older sensus catholicus with a new Anglican sensus communis, or vice versa. Nor was it merely a reasonable compromise (or so-called the Elizabethan via media) between Protestant and Catholic principles. It rather was a ressourcement — a return to the sources of the Christian faith and authority: the Bible and the early patristic traditions. Ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1728, Wesley was born, raised, and educated in this stream of restoration. So he naturally accepted the Bible and the early patristic traditions, and based on these sources, he continued to refine and develop his theology and spirituality. The overall focus of this paper is to carry out a reading faithful to the Reformed spirit of the Church of England passed down to Wesley. To be more specific, this paper aims to find an alternative way to clarify and reinterpret Wesley’s teachings on Christian perfection by examining the Greek patristic doctrine of deification. To achieve this purpose, this paper first outlines the various teachings of the Greek Fathers on deification and divide them into two main categories: (1) ontological deification and (2) ascetic deification. It then attempts an alternative reading and reinterpretation of Wesley’s doctrine of Christian perfection with the teachings of St. Clement of Alexandria, Macarius of Egypt, and the Cappadocian Fathers, who read deification from an ascetic perspective. Wesley calls Christian perfection in various terms, including holiness, sanctification, perfection, deification, love, cleansing from sin, and circumcision of the heart. And he tried to teach his terms of Christian perfection in simple, plain, and practical ways. However, a complex nuance was added to the doctrine of Christian perfection as Wesley removed the ambiguity of the term and provided time and again a clearer guide and exposition to it. As a result, the so-called competitive reading of Wesley has erupted over the past 200 years, competing with each other over who is closer to Wesley’s interpretation. This paper points out that at the center of these competitive readings and debates was an excessive reliance on the temporal and conceptual division of the salvation order developed after the Reformation in the sixteenth century. And as a way out of this old predicament, it reinterprets the doctrine of Christian perfection in light of what Wesley referred to in his 1767 letter to Dr. Dodd, namely, the doctrine of deification in the sense of ascēsis that has begun with St. Clement.
