본 논문은 웨슬리(J. Wesley)가 40여 년 동안 설교하고 가르치고 논쟁하며 주장한 기독자의 완전에 관한 사상을 요약한 그의 저서 『기독자의 완전에 대한 해설』(A Plain Account of Christian Perfection)에 담긴 그의 ‘완전성화’ 사상을 다루고 있다. 웨슬리는 기독자의 완전성화는 자신의 주장이 아니라 주님과 사도들의 교리라고 언급하면서 성서를 인용하여 그 논거를 제시한다. 따라서 본 논문은 웨슬리의 성화론의 핵심사상인 기독자의 완전성화를 증언하는 성서의 내용을 조사하여 그 성서적 기초를 살펴보았다. 이를 위하여 본 연구는 한 책의 사람(homo unius libri) 존 웨슬리가 제시한 기독자의 완전을 명령하는 성서의 두 구절(주님의 명령으로 되어 있음)에 집중하여 그 주석적 의미를 파악하고 그의 성화론의 심오한 의미를 조사하였다. 아울러 이 가르침이 오늘의 성결한 기독자에게 주는 도전을 정리하였다. 웨슬리의 완전성화의 본질은 온전한 인간존재와 그 보편적 능력으로 하나님과 이웃을 사랑하되 원수까지 사랑하라는 사랑의 수행이라고 이해될 수 있다. 이 가르침은 오늘 성결한 기독자에게 그리스도를 모범삼아 이 사랑의 이중명령을 개인적 공동체적 더 나아가 땅 끝까지 수행하도록 도전하고 있다.
Abstract
This paper deals with his ‘complete sanctification’ thought in his “A Plain Account of Christian Perfection”, which summarizes Wesley’s preaching about the perfection of the Christian who taught, argued for forty years. He cites the Bible as a reference to the complete sanctification of the Christian, not his claim, but the doctrine of the Lord and the apostles. Therefore, this paper examines the Biblical texts that testify to Wesley 's central idea of the perfect sanctification of the Christian that based on its biblical foundations. In order to this, this paper focuses on two verses (the order of the Lord) of the Bible, which commands the perfection of the Christian as presented by John Wesley, the man of one book (homo unius libri) and investigate the profound meaning of sanctification. It also challenges to today's holy Christian. The essence of Wesley’s perfect sanctification can be understood as the fulfillment of the love of God and neighbors, and loving to the enemy, with a perfect human existence and one’s universal power. This teaching is challenging today's holy Christian to follow Christ as a model of this double command of love, even both to the personal community, and to the end of the earth.
