Abstract
This paper examines how to solve critical environmental problems through Zen Buddhism. Environmental problems are becoming more serious day by day, and humanity is facing a crisis of survival. Since the Industrial Revolution, materialism has been prevalent, and nature has been destroyed by anthropocentrism and developmental logic, causing a Climate crisis. Buddhism assumes that the relationship between humans and nature is an inseparable, interdependent relationship, and suggests that changes in the Environment occur as a result of human actions. This is the starting point of Buddhist Ethics regarding the environment. In this paper we examine Buddhist solutions to environmental problems based on Zen Buddhism, focusing on Dogen's view of nature in Japan, which are based on sustainability. Dogen explains that the true aspect of life is expressed in the form of Nature, and that Nature is a being endowed with all virtues. In other words, Nature is a perfect being that maintains an ecosystem in mutual harmony with humans. Based on this, Dogen’s Zen Buddhism, the author proposes three solutions for solving environmental problems and for creating sustainable development: ① We must reestablish the relationship between Nature and humans based on interdependence, ② We must respect Nature as it is and think of a life of peaceful coexistence, and ③ We must strive for harmony with the environment.
