Abstract

As environmental issues become global concerns, Asian philosophical traditions are searched for answers on the ecological crisis. Buddhism has received special attention with its unique interpretations on nature, environment and ecology, and is seen as possibly providing a theoretical framework in guiding the protection of the environment and the preservation of nature. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the relevant doctrines innate to Buddhist thought and to examine if the current environmental movements which merged within the Buddhist society retain theoretical relevancy to the issue and are practically sound. The assertion that Buddhism is both eco-friendly and eco-supportive is based in its doctrine and culture. The former refers to the Buddhist view of life, where nature and its world view is expressed as theories of dependent-arising, no-self, and emptiness. The theory of dependent-arising is highly relevant and efficacious in serving as an eco-philosophy, since it illustrates the interconnectedness and interdependence among the compositional elements of the world. With the backing of these theoretical perspectives, the ecological implications of Buddhist practice and culture are great. Monastic communities nestled in the deep mountains, surrounded by rivers are self-contained, eco-conscious and organic, setting itself as an example. And environmental events led by Buddhist monastics in contemporary Korea, as outer expressions of their social concerns, not only generated momentum for raising public awareness about environmental issues but also provided an opportunity for the public to critically reflect on its own materialism. By leading the environmental movement, in both theoretical and practical ways, Korean Buddhism has revived itself after a long silence in the public domain.
