Abstract
Nowadays humankind is confronted with the enormous challenge of climate change. Since the Industrial Revolution the earth’s climate has being effected negatively. The global temperature has risen by 1℃ due to the heavy increase of green-house gases. Climate scientists warn that human civilization may collapse before 2050 if the increase in green-house gases continues. The IPCC encourages people to act in ways to reduce and maintain the earth’s temperature by 1.5℃. Furthermore, a drastic cut in green-house gases should be accomplished within the next ten years. But the international response is progressing slowly. Although the usage of renewable energy is increasing steadily, it isn't enough. Less energy consumption and a reduction in production that causes pollution are two necessary steps. Buddhism is regarded as a nature-friendly and ecological religion. Dependent origination (緣起) promotes a worldview that highlights mutual dependence as well as the theory of Buddha-nature (佛性), which emphasizes the inherent value of all sentient beings. These teachings are in line with promoting the changes needed to combat the climate crisis. However, mutual dependence also tends to promote acceptance of reality in a passive way rather than establishing a bases for active, ecological practice where individuals and groups can create change. Emphasizing socio-economic and structural aspects, Bhikkhu Bodhi suggests reasons and solutions regarding the climate crisis through the four noble truths (四諦). Furthermore, David R. Loy recognizes that Buddhist solutions to individual suffering may be applied to the ecological crisis as collective suffering. Also, Thich Nhat Hanh mentions that collective awakening may halt the course of destruction. Non-harming or ahimsā (不害) as a precept, the four immeasurable states of mind (四無量心), and the six perfections or ṣaṭ-pāramitā (六波羅蜜) can all be utilized as ethical, ecological practices. However, to curb the problematic trends causing the climate crisis, concrete practices leading institutional and social changes are needed. Buddhist studies should act as a theoretical starting point and provide values and visions for the solution to this human crisis. This can be done through the modernization and materialization of doctrines which are applicable to the fields in question.
