자기의식 문제와 지성적 직관 - 피히테의 『지식론의 새로운 서술 시도』(1997) 연구

본 연구는 ‘인간의 자기의식’을 다루되, 그것의 주요 특징을 피히테의 초기 저작인 『지식론의 새로운 서술 시도』(1797)를 통해 살펴볼 것이다. 자기의식은 아주 오래전부터 그 가치와 중요성이 널리 인정되었고, 특히 근대에 와서는 우리가 가진 일체 지식을 설명할 철학의 원리로 손꼽혀서 데카르트, 라이프니츠, 칸트 등에 의해 중용되었지만, 정작 그것의 가능 조건을 논의해 보면 매우 심각한 내적 문제를 가진 주제였다. 이 문제의 심각성을 인지하고 적극적 해결책을 제시한 최초의 철학자는 피히테였다. 피히테는 만일 우리가 자기의식을 일종의 반성이라고 보고, 내가 나 자신과 주체와 객체 관계를 맺어 그 결과로 나 자신을 통찰하려 한다면, 우리는 ‘무한소급’ 같은 심각한 오류에 빠지고, 결국 자기의식을 설명하지도 못할 것이라고 보았다. 피히테가 보기에 자기의식을 적절히 설명하기 위해 반드시 충족해야 할 한 가지 조건은 ‘의식하는 자아와 의식되는 자아가 분리되어서는 안 된다’는 것이다. 자아가 의식의 주체와 객체의 두 항으로 분리되면, 의식 주체에 대한 확인을 위해 제2의 의식, 제3의 의식 등으로 무한소급해야 하며, 의식 주체와 객체가 동일하다는 것을 입증할 방법도 없이 그저 둘의 동일성을 주장해야만 할 것이기 때문이다. 이런 문제를 극복하기 위해 피히테는 자기의식에서 자아의 비분리와 직접적 내적 관계가 필수적임을 강조한다. 자아는 자기 정립이지만(존재), 그때 정립되는 나는 내가 정립한다는 사실을 이미 알고 있어야 한다(인식). 그리고 이런 비대상적이고 선반성적인 직접적 자기인식 관계를 표현할 적절한 용어로 피히테는 ‘지성적 직관’을 제안하였다. 우리가 행하는 모든 의식이 전제해야 하는 자기의식은 지성적 자기직관으로서, 사유 주체의 직접적 자기 친숙성, 곧 명증성을 의미했다.
Abstract
This paper deals with human self-consciousness, main characteristics of which will be examined through Fichte’s early work, Versuch einer neuen Darstellung der Wissenschaftslehre (1797). Self-consciousness has long been widely recognized for its value and importance, especially in modern times, when it was used by Descartes, Leibniz and Kant as the principle of philosophy to explain all our knowledge. But when we discuss the possible conditions of it, it is revealed as the subject with serious internal problems. It was Fichte, who first recognized the seriousness of its problems and tried to find a solution. He believes that if we take self-consciousness for a kind of reflection, and if we try to make a subject-object relationship with ourselves, we will fall into serious error. In Fichte’s view, one of the conditions that must be met in order to properly describe self-consciousness is that the thinking and the thought self must not be separated. If the self were divided into two terms, the subject of consciousness and the object, we would have to regress to the second consciousness in order to identify the subject of the first, and then to the third consciousness in order to identify the subject of the second, etc. (infinite regress) and we would just claim the identity of the thinking and the thought self, without proving they are really the same. To avoid these problems, Fichte emphasizes the direct relationship between the two: I put myself, and I am simultaneously consious of myself as such. Fichte proposes ‘intellectual intuition’ as an appropriate term to express this sort of direct self-awareness. Self-consciousness presupposed by all our consciousness is an intellectual self-intuition, meaning the self-familiarity or evidence of the thinker.
