Abstract
Vowel devoicing is a type of vowel variation phenomenon observed in certain languages such as Korean, Japanese, Greek, etc. This phenomenon is also found in Spanish, despite the fact that this language is known for having a stable vowel system. Vowel devoicing occurs when a vowel is pronounced without the vibration of the vocal cords. This study considers devoiced vowels as a linguistic variant and analyzes this phenomenon in the Spanish spoken in Mexico City and Bogotá. An analysis of 14,400 unstressed vowels—7,200 from 18 oral samples of the PRESEEA corpus from Mexico City and 7,200 from 18 oral samples of the PRESEEA corpus from Bogotá—revealed that 5% of unstressed vowels in Mexico City and 2.7% in Bogotá were realized as voiceless vowels. The analysis results from both regions largely aligned with previous studies. In the preceding phonetic environment of unstressed vowels, voiceless consonants play a significant role, while pauses have little effect. In contrast, in the following phonetic environment, pauses have the greatest influence on the occurrence of voiceless vowels, followed by voiceless fricatives. In both regions, vowel devoicing appears to be strongly influenced by voiceless consonants and frequently occurs before a pause.
