Abstract
This study examines the relationship between pottery distribution, household functions, and the use of internal space in Middle Bronze Age dwellings of the Geum River ba- sin. While previous studies have focused primarily on settlement structure and hierarchy, this research investigates household activities and spatial organization from a micro-scale perspective. Dwellings were classified into circular and rectangular types, with rectangu- lar dwellings further subdivided according to the presence or absence of hearths. Pottery types, sizes, and spatial distributions were analyzed to reconstruct patterns of domestic ac- tivities and dwelling functions. The analysis identified three primary spatial zones within dwellings: the central area, intermediate area, and wall-side area. Most dwellings exhibited activity patterns concentrat- ed in one or two zones, suggesting spatial differentiation according to function. In contrast, pottery distributions spanning all three zones or concentrated in specific areas were more closely associated with ritual or discard-related activities. Based on these patterns, dwelling functions were classified into three categories: daily domestic use, ritual use, and discard use. Regional comparison reveals that, despite belonging to the same Songguk-ri cultural tradition, Middle Bronze Age dwellings in the Geum River basin display significant differ- ences in pottery composition and spatial organization. The Mihogang and upper Geum River regions are characterized primarily by patterns associated with daily domestic activ- ities, whereas the middle and lower Geum River regions and the west coast show greater functional diversity, including ritual and discard activities accompanied by the appearance of red-burnished pottery. Functional differentiation is also more pronounced in rectangu- lar dwellings from the middle and lower Geum River regions than in those from the west coast. These findings suggest that regional environmental and social differences were re- flected in household organization and the use of domestic space during the Middle Bronze Age.
