A Study on the Characteristics of Sok-eum Reflected in Hongmujeongunyeokhun

After the invention of Hunminjeongeum(訓民正音), King Sejong ordered a group of scholars to translate the Hongmujeongun(洪武正韻, Jeong-un) into Korean. Translation and annotation of the Jeong-un was completed in 1455, this book is Hongmujeongunyeokhun(洪武正韻譯訓, Yeok-hun). In this book, the pronunciation devices in the Jeong-un were replaced by the Korean alphabet. In addition to the Chinese readings defined in the Jeong-un, i.e., the Jeong-eum(正音, standard sound), the contemporary Mandarin readings were included under the name of Sok-eum(俗音, vernacular sound). This paper aims to study the following problems about the Sok-eum of Yeok-hun. First, I am looking into the characteristics of the Sok-eum reflected in the Yeok-hun. We can conclude that the Sok-eum of Yeok-hun have the following characteristics; narrow transcription, the commonly used sound in northern China during the fifteenth century, standard sound, etc. Secondly, I will analyze a difference between the Sok-eum of Yeok-hun and left-right Chinese readings in the Beonyeoknobak(飜譯老朴) and be concerned with several problems about differences of transcription.
Abstract
After the invention of Hunminjeongeum(訓民正音), King Sejong ordered a group of scholars to translate the Hongmujeongun(洪武正韻, Jeong-un) into Korean. Translation and annotation of the Jeong-un was completed in 1455, this book is Hongmujeongunyeokhun(洪武正韻譯訓, Yeok-hun).
