Hunminjeongeum is a system of phonetic symbols that reflects the initial, medial and final sounds of Korean syllable structures of the time when it was invented, and it was written syllable by syllable. This writing system varied its function depending on what pronunciations it purported to represent, especially when Chinese characters were concerned. Examples include the revised representations of Chinese characters in Tong kukjeongun, the representations of Chinese pronunciations in Hongmujeongunyeokhun,and the mantric (tarani) representations in Seokbosangjeol and Weolinseokbo, in which a letter that appears as a final sound or at a rhyme-end position―ㅇ,ㅱ,ㆆ,ㅸ or ㅿ to name a few―functions as a constant writing unit, irrespective of its original sound value.
Abstract
