이동통신 매체를 활용한 도시 일상활동 분석방법 연구동향: 도시 연구에서 활용 가능성과 제약 요인

초록

사람들의 공간 이동 행태를 조사 분석하는 일은 도시 연구의 주요 관심사다. 최근 대중적으로 널리 보급된 휴대전화와 같은 이동통신 매체를 통해 위치 정보를 추적하는 위치기반서비스 기술이 상용화되고 있다. 이에 발맞추어 이동통신 매체를 활용하여 도시 일상 활동 분석에 필요한 광범위한 시공간 이동 행태 자료를 수집 분석하고 이를 시각적 형태로 가시화하려는 연구들이 등장하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 최근 외국에서 진행되고 있는 이동통신 매체를 활용한 도시 일상 활동 분석 연구들의 동향과 주요 사례, 이들 사례에서 사용된 분석 방법의 특징과 의의를 고찰하였다. 본 연구의 사례 분석을 위하여 각 사례의 연구 목적과 아울러, 자료 수집 방식에 따라 첫째, 소수 자원자를 대상으로 한 표본 실험 방식과, 둘째, 무작위 다수 시민을 대상으로 한 자료 수집 방식으로 나누어 각 방식별 특징과 장단점, 가능한 자료 수집 유형 및 분석 가능 도시 활동 등을 비교 검토하였다. 그리고 이런 형태의 연구들의 향후 활용 가능성과 함께, 그 진전을 막는 사회적 제약 요인들, 특히 민간통신회사로부터 자료 확보의 문제와 개인 프라이버시 침해 문제에 대해 살펴보고 이의 극복 방안과 우리나라에 대한 시사점을 모색해 보았다.

Abstract

Recently, mobile devices embedded with location-based tracking functions have become prevalent across the globe. These devices are also useful tools for conducting large scale, representative human behavioral research. In this paper, I review some seminal attempts that tried to first gather the data of citizens’ time-space behaviors by using mobile devices, then analyze and visualize urban daily activities. In addition, I investigate some of the barriers to the wide implementation of these kinds of experiments, focusing on data access and permission issues as well as personal privacy issues.
