Abstract
The purpose of this study is to shed new light on iconotext in picture books from the perspective of typography, analyzing various examples of works and exploring the use of typography. The examples analyzed were the Bologna children’s book fair’s Ragazzi award winners, a prestigious award in the world of children's literature. In picture books, typography is often thought of as a paratext, where words are arranged to match the pictures, but typography also serves as an iconotext, where words and pictures interact and combine to create new text. It emphasizes the narrative of the picture book and creates new meanings, creating another imaginary world beyond what the words and pictures show. Typography as a paratext and iconotext intervenes in many ways, from the title and cover, which are the entrance to the book, to the editorial design. In order to analyze the implementation of iconotext in picture books from a typographic point of view, this study analyzes the typography of nine winners of the Bologna Ragazzi award over the last seven years, divided into seven elements. We analyzed the titles and covers of the books, the formality elements(thickness, color, size, slant, spacing, etc.), the framing that creates visual separation such as dialogs in the text, the flourish that adds pictorial elements to the text, the tone of voice that conveys different voices, the onomatopeia that illustrates onomatopoeia and mimetic word, and the metafiction that involves the author, and we found that typography in picture books is increasingly developing as a way to implement iconotext. Typography in picture books is being used as a means of expressing iconotext that allows for new interpretations, rather than the traditional pursuit of readability according to the age of the reader. It can also be seen that translated picture books are also utilizing iconotext by using similar typefaces as much as possible to reflect the original author’s intention and utilizing the author’s typographic expression.
