Abstract
The effective use of typographical elements (e.g., letter shapes and layout) in picture books is recognized as crucial for capturing readers' interest and promoting their immersion. However, empirical research on the role of interest and age-related differences in these effects is limited. This study investigates how various typographic features in picture books elicit readers' interest and lead to reading immersion through that interest. Additionally, it compares these effects across three groups: lower elementary, upper elementary, and adult readers. Using Hayes's (2022) Process Macro Model 4, the study tested whether interest mediates the effect of typography on reading immersion. The results showed that enhanced typography in picture books significantly increased readers' interest and immersion in reading. The direct and indirect effects of typography on immersion were both significant, confirming interest as a partial mediator. Upper elementary students exhibited the lowest levels of interest and immersion, while adult readers demonstrated the highest levels of immersion. In conclusion, this study confirmed that typography in picture books is an important factor in enhancing reading immersion by stimulating readers' interest. This study underscores the importance of using typography to stimulate reader interest and immersion in picture book design and reading education. In particular, picture book authors and designers should use appropriate fonts and layouts to stimulate reader interest. Additionally, reading education programs should explore ways to use visual text elements to boost reader immersion.
