Abstract
The central aim of this article is to analyze the formation, development, and changes of Sciences Po from a historical sociology perspective. This institution enjoys a very particular position in the French modern elite high education system. It had been created in the 1870's, much later than most of the prestigious Grandes Ecoles. Furthermore, it was not established by the state, but by the private sector, namely by a group of French intellectuals, politicians and businessmen led by Émile Boutmy. The privately-managed status had been maintained during the Third Republic, before turning public in the Fourth Republic. Since the beginning, Sciences Po has always been a specialized school forming the power elite of the country. This article analyzes Sciences Po in three periods. The first one runs from 1872 to the 1930s and covers the Third Republic. The Ecole libre des sciences politiques had been founded after the defeat in the Franco-Prussian War as a mean to rebuild the nation. The second period began at the Liberation when the school had been incorporated into the state-run Grandes-Ecoles system. It had been renamed the Institut d'Etudes Politiques and managed by the private Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques. The last period began in the 1990s with the challenges of globalization when Sciences Po had become a commercial brand name designating both the school and the foundation.
