이 글의 목적은 프랑스 교양교육의 역사적 변천과 현황을 살펴봄으로써 그것의 기본 정신과 의미를 탐색하는 것이다. 이 글은 우선 중세 프랑스 초기 대학에서 교양교육의 기원을 찾아보고, 대혁명 이후에 그것이 어떻게 변화되어왔는지 추적한다. 다음으로 프랑스 중등교육 교과과정의 핵심 목표와 고등학교 졸업학위인 바칼로레아의 운영방식을 통해서 프랑스 교양교육의 내용과 성격에 주목한다. 오늘날 교양교육의 모태가 된 프랑스 초기 대학 콜레쥬의 자유학예는 대혁명 이후에 공교육 중심의 중등교육과정으로 재편되었다. 계몽사상과 혁명 정신이 반영된 프랑스의 교양교육은 기독교적 도덕교육과 르네상스식 인문교육으로부터 벗어나 공적 이성과 합리성을 지닌 공화국 시민을 길러내는 것을 목표로 한다는 점에서 시민교육의 성격을 강하게 지니게 되었다. 또한 프랑스의 교양교육은 국가가 관장하는 공교육, 모두를 위한 평등교육, 무료로 제공하는 무상교육의 전통이 오늘날까지 강하게 유지되고 있다. 평등교육과 시민교육이라는 프랑스 교양교육의 기본 정신 및 원칙의 재발견과 검토는 한국의 공교육과 교양교육의 방향을 모색하는데 중요한 참고가 될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Purpose: This study reviews the history and current landscape of the liberal education in France to uncover the fundamental conceptions employed as well as the implications this has for education in general. Design/methodology/data/approach: The paper begins with the origin of the liberal education system in early French universities, and tracks its changes up until the present. Based on these findings, this study analyzes the nature of the French liberal education system by carefully examining the functional operation of the secondary education system in France and the diploma it grants, the baccalauréat. Findings/Results: The liberal arts education system of the early French university, collège, which is the matrix of the liberal education system of today, was rearranged into the secondary education system of France, centered on public education, after the French Revolution. The liberal education system of France, which reflected the ideas of the Enlightenment and the spirit of the Revolution, escaped from the educational ideals of Christian morality and the Renaissant liberal arts education system, and aimed at nurturing the citizens of the Republic, by equipping them with public reason and rationality. In this sense, it can be conceived of as a form of civic education. Up until the present, the general French education system has strongly maintained its tradition of the public education (the government operated), the notion of equal access to education (education for everyone), and the concept of a free education (education provided to the students for free). Value: Rediscovering and reviewing the notion of equal access to education and civic education, both of which are the basic spirit and principle of the French liberal education system, serves as a significant and meaningful reference in seeking the manner in which public education and education in general should be designed and implemented in Korea.
