다마지오의 이론에 비추어 본 후기 리머의 ‘느낌의 교육’에 대한 재해석

본 연구는 베넷 리머의 경험중심 음악교육철학이 제안하는 ‘느낌의 교육(education of feelings)’을 안토니오 다마지오의 논의에 비추어 재해석함으로써 음악 내적인 앎으로서 음악적 경험의 의미와 그 교육적 가치를 논의하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 전기 리머의 ‘느낌의 교육’ 논의에 내포된 해석상의 한계를 들여다보고 이를 극복하는 방안으로서 다마지오의 연구를 검토할 것이다. 이것은 ‘느낌의 교육’이 어떻게 우리의 깊은 내적 에너지로서 느낌의 차원에 접촉된 자기이해(self-understanding) 의 가능성을 가지는지 보여주는 것을 통해 음악을 포함한 예술교육의 목적에 대한 담론에 기여할 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to reinterpret the meaning of the “education of feelings” suggested in Bennett Reimer’s later philosophy of music education, through the lens of Antonio Damasio’s work. To do this, we explore Antonio Damasio’s work as a way of overcoming the limitations inherent in the early Reimer’s discussion on the “education of feelings.” We then try to show how the key Damasio concepts we introduce can help us reinterpret Reimer’s idea of the “education of feelings” as the purpose of music education. Here we focus especially on the educational value of musical experiences in “knowing within music” in Reimer’s later philosophy. In conclusion, this paper shows how music education can be a powerful way of cultivating self-understanding as we as communicate with others through musical or structured sounds that are deeply rooted in our inner life.
