Abstract
This study examined whether the use of maladaptive defense styles mediates the relationship between narcissism and body shame in middle-aged men, and explored the mediating effects of each defense mechanism. Data were collected from 350 middle-aged men and analyzed using SPSS 25.0, SPSS PROCESS macro(v4.3), and AMOS 22.0. The results are as follows: First, narcissistic grandiosity was not directly related to body shame, but was found to reduce body shame through lower use of conflict-avoidant defenses. Second, in the relationship between narcissistic vulnerability and body shame, immature and conflict-avoidant defenses fully mediated the relationship, and self-inhibitory defenses partially mediated the relationship. Third, as the results of exploring individual defense mechanisms, acting out, projection, consumption, and isolation significantly mediated the link between narcissistic grandiosity and body shame, while reaction formation and resignation additionally showed significant mediating effects in relation to narcissistic vulnerability. These findings suggest that the use of maladaptive defenses and the specific defense mechanisms may play an important role in either increasing or decreasing body shame in middle-aged men. The significance and limitations of the study, implications for counseling practice, and suggestions for further research were discussed.
