Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate mediating effects of mentalized affectivity and passive aggression in the process of narcissistic vulnerability affecting somatization. A total of 390 young men and women aged 20 to 39 participated in the online survey. The mediating effect was verified with a structural equation model using SPSS 22.0 and Mplus ver.7. As a study result, first, the relationship between narcissistic vulnerability and somatization was partially mediated by passive aggression. Second, the influence of narcissistic vulnerability on and somatization was sequentially mediated by mentalized affectivity and passive aggression. Specifically, narcissistic vulnerability lowered mentalized affectivity, which increased passive aggression and ultimately increasing somatization. The results suggest that narcissistic vulnerability hinders mentalizing emotion, causing distress to manifest as passive aggression without realizing. Ultimately, however, this frustration appears to be redirected toward their own bodies, leading to physical symptoms. The academic significance, limitations, practical implications of this study and suggestions for future research were discussed.
