Abstract

This study empirically analyzes the impact of social capital—an area of growing interest in both academic and policy circles—on economic inequality in Korean society. Social capital, which encompasses trust, social networks, and civic participation, represents the qualitative dimensions of solidarity and cooperation and serves as a non-material explanatory variable that complements conventional frameworks of economic resource distribution. The empirical findings indicate that the core components of social capital—trust, social networks, and civic participation—contribute significantly to mitigating economic inequality, with trust emerging as the most influential factor. A stratified analysis reveals that the inequality-reducing effect of social capital is particularly pronounced among low-income groups. This suggests that social capital plays a crucial role for structurally vulnerable populations. The findings further underscore that policies aimed at alleviating economic inequality should integrate institutional development and the strategic expansion of social capital alongside material redistribution measures. Such an approach redefines social capital as a vital mechanism for promoting inclusive growth and achieving sustainable social integration.
