벤야민의 ‘수집가’ 개념에서 나타나는 역사 인식의 가능성

본고의 목적은 벤야민의 ‘수집가’ 개념을 경유하여 그의 역사철학을 이해하는 데에 있다. ‘수집가’는 벤야민의 역사철학을 이해하는 데에 중요한 텍스트인 「역사의 개념에 대하여」와 매우 밀접한 연관이 있는데, 그보다 3년 전에 쓰인 「수집가이자 역사가 에두아르트 푹스」가 역사철학테제의 주요 부분들을 선취하고 있다는 점에서 그러하다. 벤야민은 수집 행위의 근본인 ‘소유’의 의미를 다시 생각함으로써 일반적으로 생각되는 페티시즘적인 성격의 수집가와는 전혀 다른 ‘진정한 수집가’의 본성을 보여주고 있다. 그리고 이 수집가의 본성이란 다름 아닌 역사가로 드러나게 된다. 벤야민의 역사철학에서 핵심이 되는 ‘역사의 구성’이라는 테마는 다름 아닌 수집가의 ‘기억을 소유하는 실천적 행위’와 맞물려 있는 것이다. 그리고 이때의 구성이란, 유대 메시아주의의 ‘원상복구’ 개념과 불가분하게 관계하고 있다는 점에서 벤야민의 역사 인식과 메시아주의간의 밀접한 연관성을 다시금 확인할 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to understand Benjamin’s philosophy of history through his concept of ‘collector.’ The ‘Collector’ is very closely related to his philosophy of history, because Eduard Fuchs: Collector and Historian considerably preoccupies his last work, Theses on the Philosophy of History. Benjamin is rethinking the meaning of ‘ownership,’ the basis of the act of collecting, showing the true nature of a "genuine collector". And the nature of this collector is none other than historian. The theme of the ‘construction of history’, which is at the heart of Benjamin's philosophy of history, is in line with the collector's praxis of owning past experiences. Also the construction of history is inseparable from the concept of ‘Apokatasis’ in Messianism, which shows the intimate relationship between the philosophy of history and Jewish Messianism in Benjamin’s thought.
