Abstract
This study was intended to evaluate the restorative effect of methanolic extract from Cedrela sinensis’s leaf on the damaged nails. To fulfill the purpose, the thickness, morphology, roughness, hardness and element content of the artificially damaged nail plate were measured or observed after application of 5% or 10% methanolic extract from Cedrela sinensis’s leaf mixed with envy® nail strengthener for 4 weeks. In the morphological observation, intact nail appeared to be healthy showing its keratin layers were attached to each other tightly, and artificially damaged nail was cracked in its keratin and partly dissolved. After 4-weeks application of test materials, E2 group (10% methanolic extract from Cedrela sinensis’s leaf) showed the highest morphological restoration. The decreased values of roughness significantly (p⁄0.05) higher in the order of E2¤E1¤VC group compared to the control group at 2- and 4-weeks application of test materials, and its value of 30.7% for E2 group at 4-weeks application of test material was highest among the groups. The increased values of hardness significantly (p⁄0.05) higher in the order of E2¤E1¤VC group compared to the control group at 2- and 4-weeks application of test materials, and its value of 50.5% for E2 group at 4-weeks application of test material was highest among the groups. Based on these results, it was ascertained that 5% or 10% methanolic extract from Cedrela sinensis’s leaf was effective in restoration of damaged nail induced by artificial nail treatment.
