Abstract

A new masculinity was born in the Enlightenment(Gaehwagi). The strong masculinity was needed for the propagation of the concept of nation and the clear crisis of nation. History-Biography Fictions tried to solve demand for this masculinity. This paper studied the masculinity in History-Biography Fictions from three points of view. The first, the formation process of the masculinity in History-Biography Fictions was examined. It was possible to form the heroes as the military by connecting he concept of nation with the modern cognition of a body. The second, the effect of the masculinity in History-Biography Fictions was examined. The strong masculinity became a tradition by historicizing the military heroes through History-Biography Fictions. This is the invention of tradition in the 1900's. The third, the limit of the masculinity in History-Biography Fictions was examined. An emphasis on the strong masculinity exposed the absence of the masculinity in reality. The strong masculinity in the 1900's was only fictional product. This mythology of the strong masculinity was demanded in social crisis sometimes. Therefore the study on the feature of masculinity in the 1900's will become the basis of the understanding masculinity in Korean contemporary literature.
