Abstract
The study aims to explore the relationship between types of participation in bullying and interpret the correlation of each type around psychological factors on 5-6th grade elementary school students. As a result, the most outstanding type revealed by the students was defenders and the second was bystanders. All the type of victims, bully-followers and bullies had significantly positive correlations and the bystander type only showed negative correlations. Among sub-factors of empathy and locus of control, social skill had a significance in accounting for all of five participatory types of bullying. Accordingly, it was found that children who have low social skill were more likely to become bystanders and victims and high social skill influenced the role of defenders. However, as the explanation power of victims’ emotional empathy was larger than that of social skill and showed a higher level, it was judged that in the case of primary school students, emotional reactions towards victims have a higher effect on taking the role of defenders. Thus, to prevent bullying in elementary school students, it is important to educate them to develop empathy and reactions for those who suffered at emotional aspects. Also, improving social skill is necessary to maintain amicable peer-relations on the basis of sympathy with others.
