Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine whether psychological well-being, couplerelationships, and attitudes toward children differed among the three categories of childlessmarried Koreans. The three categories were voluntary, involuntary, and postponingchildless groups. In this study, psychological well-being included subjective happiness, lifesatisfaction, self-esteem, and depression; couple relationships included marital satisfaction, dyadic adjustment, perceived likelihood of separation or divorce, and the couple’s leisuretime; and attitudes toward children included one’s aspirations for having a child, thespouse’s aspirations for having a child, intention to adopt, attitudes toward parenthood, and the ideal number of children. Data came from 544 childless Koreans who had beenmarried for at least three years, aged 49 years or younger, and lived in metropolitan Seoul. We used descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, and chi-squared tests to examine thedifferences among the voluntary, involuntary, and postponing groups. Overall, childless married Koreans reported modestly higher levels of psychologicalwell-being, couple relationships, and attitudes toward children. Some of theirsocio-demographic characteristics (i.e., years of marriage, subjective health, perceivedincome sufficiency, spouse’s income, religiosity, having dual incomes, homeownership)differed among the three childless groups. For psychological well-being, we foundsignificant differences in the levels of subjective happiness, life satisfaction, self-esteem,and depression among the three groups. For couple relationships, significant differenceswere found among the three groups in marital satisfaction, dyadic adjustment, andperceived likelihood of separation or divorce. Finally, for attitudes toward children, wealso found significant differences in the levels of one’s aspirations for having a child, the spouse’s aspirations for having a child, intention to adopt, attitudes toward parenthood, and the ideal number of children among the three childless groups. In conclusion, voluntary, involuntary, and postponing childless groups differed inindividual, relational, and generational aspects. These findings imply that understandingchildless Koreans using the three categories would be a useful approach in future research. We also suggest that policymakers and practitioners need to consider the heterogeneityof the three childless groups in developing public policies and providing services withregards to fertility and childlessness.
