무자녀 기혼여성은 우리 사회의 소수자로, 이들의 무자녀 결정경험은 잘 알려지지 않았다는 점에서 이 연구가 시작되었다. 따라서 이 연구는 무자녀 기혼여성의 무자녀 결정경험을이해하는 데 초점을 두고, 8명의 연구참여자를 심층면접하여 자료를 수집하였다. 여기서 밝혀진 결과는 다음과 같다. 연구참여자들이 제시한 무자녀 결정경험은 ‘원가족에서의 부정적 경험’, ‘부모됨에 대한부담감’, ‘개인적인 가치관’, ‘양육 환경에 대한 부정적인 인식’, ‘가치실현’, ‘불임’ 등 여섯 가지 요인으로 유형화되었다. ‘원가족에서의 부정적 경험’은 부모의 자녀에 대한 차별과 부모결혼생활의 갈등을 보면서 느낀 경험과 연관되어 있었다. 두 번째 ‘부모됨에 대한 부담감’은출산과 양육이 자연스러운 일은 아니며 개인성향으로 볼 때 부모로서 자질이 부족하다는 인식으로 요약된다. 세 번째 요인은 ‘개인적인 가치관’으로 결혼과 자녀에 대한 변화된 가치관을 보여주고 있다. 네 번째 요인은 ‘양육 환경에 대한 부정적인 인식’으로 버려진 아이에 대한 부정적인 인식이나 우리 사회의 양육현실에 대한 비판과 지나친 양육비 등을 제시하고 있다. 다섯 번째 ‘가치실현’ 요인은 자녀양육보다 사회적으로 가치 있는 일과 개인의 발전을 도모하는 것이 더 중요하다는 인식이다. 마지막으로 ‘불임’은 신체적 조건과 연관된 것으로 소위 ‘비자발적’ 무자녀의 대표적인 요인이다. 앞으로 재생산 결정은 선택의 문제가 될 가능성이 높다. 따라서 ‘모성’과 ‘여성’ 간에 여유로운 간격이 만들어진다면, 다시 말해 여성이 강제적으로 모성의 역할을 할 필요가 없다면여성은 보다 자유롭게 자신의 활동영역을 넓혀갈 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Childless women's experience of making the decision not to have children was examined through a qualitative analysis of half-structured interviews. Analysis revealed 6 themes of their decision in the essential description. These themes consist of (1) experiences of previous family in origin, (2) stress of parenthood, (3) changing personal values, (4) negative perception of nurturing environments, (5) actualization of their own values, (6) infertility. The outcomes of their decision are complicated processes that is difficult for women to understand the implications of the choice they are making. Women's perceptions of their childlessness as ‘voluntary’ choice or ‘involuntary’ choice are complex and subjective. It seems likely that voluntary choice about reproductive decisions features more strongly among women in a close future. If some space were created between ‘mother’ and ‘woman’, most women would have increased freedom to choose their own work, regardless of their having children or not.
