Abstract
Utilizing the data of 2006-2010 American Community Survey Public Use MicroSamples, this study begins with descriptive statistics on the household structure of KoreanAmericans by their immigrant generations. After finding out that the levels of singlehoodare dramatically different by nativity- even after age is controlled for- logistic regressionsare applied to examine socioeconomic, demographic, and contextual determinants ofsinglehood. The results from this study support a hypothesis that women of highersocioeconomic status(measured by college education and more, professional occupations, and annual income of over $60,000) are more likely to remain single while men of higherSES are less likely to do so. In line with assimilation theory, the level of singlehoodare found to be higher among Korean Americans who were born in the US than theirfirst generation counterparts(controlling for other factors). Meanwhile, a hypothesis thatliving in metro areas where Korean Americans are heavily represented would decreasethe level of singlehood (because it will increase the chance of meeting a coethnic maritalpartner) is not supported. This study adds to a growing body of research on comparativefamily studies by conceptually linking assimilation processes in a host society and thechange in attitude toward marriage from a sending country.
