한국 무자녀 부부의 초상 II : 자발형과 비자발형 무자녀 기혼자의 심리적 복지 예측 요인 탐색

초록

본 연구는 자발형과 비자발형 무자녀 기혼자의 심리적 복지(생활만족도, 우울)를 예측하는 요인을 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 결혼한 지 3년이 경과하였으며, 자녀가 없는 50세 미만의 기혼자 361명(자발형 182명, 비자발형 179명)의 자료를 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 무자녀 기혼자는 중간 수준으로 생활에 만족하였으며, 자발형이 비자발형에 비해생활만족도가 유의하게 높았다. 우울은 유형에 상관없이 중간보다 낮은 수준이었다. 둘째,생활만족도를 예측하는 변수를 알아보기 위해 다중회귀분석을 실시한 결과 무자녀 유형에 상관없이 젊고, 종교를 중시하는 삶을 살고, 부부소득이 적정하다고 생각하는 경우 생활만족도가 높았다. 그러나 유형별 차이도 있어 자발형은 남성인 경우, 홑벌이인 경우, 부부소득 수준이 높은 경우, 부부만 보내는 시간의 빈도가 높은 경우 생활만족도가 높았다. 비자발형은가족주의를 지지하는 경우, 양성평등적 가족부양을 지지하는 경우, 취학 전 자녀를 어머니가직접 돌보아야 한다는 견해에 덜 동의하는 경우 생활만족도가 높았다. 셋째, 우울을 예측하는 변수를 분석한 결과 무자녀 유형에 상관없이 부부만 함께 대화하거나 활동을 하는 시간의빈도가 낮을수록 우울 수준이 높았다. 유형별로는, 자발형의 경우 부부소득이 적정하지 않다고 생각하거나 남녀차별적 가족부양 태도를 보일수록 우울 수준이 높았다. 비자발형의 경우에는 여성이 남성보다 우울 수준이 높았고, 부부소득이 낮은 경우 우울 수준이 높았다. 이상과 같은 연구결과는 무자녀 부부를 대상으로 실천적, 정책적 방안을 마련할 때 자발형과 비자발형의 차이 등 무자녀 부부의 다양성을 고려할 필요가 있음을 시사한다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that predict childless marriedKoreans' psychological well-being, measured by life satisfaction and depression. Datacame from 361 childless married Koreans (182 voluntary childless individuals, 179involuntary childless individuals) aged 49 years or younger, had been married for at leastthree years, and lived in metropolitan Seoul. We separated the childless individuals intotwo groups, voluntary childlessness and involuntary childlessness, and examined thepredictors of life satisfaction and depression in each group using multiple regressionanalyses. The findings revealed that, overall, childless married Koreans reported a modest levelof life satisfaction and a relatively low level of depression, but the voluntary group's lifesatisfaction was significantly higher than the involuntary group's. In addition, younger age,greater importance of religion, and greater perceived couple income sufficiency wereassociated with greater life satisfaction both for the voluntary and involuntary groups. Forthe voluntary group, being male, having a single income in the household, higher coupleincome, and greater frequency of couple-only time were also related to greater lifesatisfaction. Only for the involuntary group, familism, egalitarian gender roles about familybreadwinning, and attitudes toward maternal child care were associated with lifesatisfaction. Another finding was that both groups' frequency of couple-only time wasnegatively related to depression. Unique factors for the voluntary group were perceivedincome sufficiency and egalitarian gender roles about family breadwinning, which werenegatively associated with depression. For the involuntary group, being female and havinglower couple income were related to greater depression. Our results show that the predictors of psychological well-being both overlapped anddiffered between the voluntary and involuntary childless groups. This finding suggests thatpolicymakers and practitioners need to take into consideration the heterogeneity ofchildless married Koreans.
