Abstract

Whereas scholarly discussions about regional community building in East Asia have provided diverse perspectives and insights regarding why such ideas are relevant for Korean diplomacy or what would be desirable diplomatic paths for regional peace and order in the region, there have been relatively few attempts to discuss ‘how to’ build it or the efficacy of several ‘how to’ options including initiatives that we currently observe in the diplomatic scenes around East Asia. This article aims to complement the gap at least partially. Out of many issues related to East Asian community building, this article focuses on social relation or identity building, drawing on socialization and identity studies that have been undertaken in the field of International Relations(IR). Specifically, it pursues conceptual discussions about how ‘relational structure’ between socializers and socializees in international relations could affect the efficacy of different approaches that diplomatic actors could take to narrow social distance. Then the discussion will provide policy implications about some of the current and future policy initiatives being discussed in the diplomatic scene in East Asia.
