탈춤의 아카이빙 방법과 방향 －세계탈문화예술연맹(IMACO)의 세계탈아카이브 사례를 중심으로－

2020년 3월 31일 문화재청은 유네스코 인류무형문화유산 대표목록(Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity)으로 ‘한국의 탈춤(Talchum, Mask Dance Drama in the Republic of Korea)’ 등재신청서를 제출했다. 그리고 2022년 11월 1일 유네스코 무형유산위원회 산하 평가기구(Evaluation Body)의 심사결과 ‘등재 권고’ 판정을 받았다. 이제 11월 28일부터 12월 3일까지 모로코 라바트에서 개최되는 제17차 무형유산보호 정부간위원회의에서 그 결과를 기다리고 있다. 이번 등재를 통해 분명 ‘한국의 탈춤’에 대한 국제적인, 그리고 국내적으로도 관심이 상승할 것이다. 문화란 사람이 만들고 사람들에 의해 지속될 수 있는데, 그 문화를 향유하는 사람들의 관심이야 말로 그 지속의 연료라 할 수 있다. 그런 측면에서 ‘한국의 탈춤’ 등재는, 그 문화의 지속가능성을 한단계 성장시키는 기회가 될 것으로 예상된다. 본 등재의 과정에서 가장 중심에서 일한 기관이 세계탈문화예술연맹이었다. 그리고 이 기관은 등재 추진의 사무국 역할에 그치는 것이 아니라, 국제 탈문화의 교류와 진흥을 위한 네트워크를 쌓고, 탈문화 자료들에 대한 아카이빙을 하는 기관이다. 본고는 바로 세계탈문화예술연맹의 아카이브 사업 사례를 공유했다. ‘세계탈문화’를 위해 매우 긴요한 작업이 아카이브인데, 과연 그것이 우리의 기대치만큼 채워주고 있는지 의문이 든다. 그리고 비판을 할 수 있다. 그러나 그 현실 맥락을 따져보면 이해가는 측면도 존재한다. 바로 본고는 이상적인 아카이브 구축 방안을 제시하려는 것이 아니라, 현실을 드러내고 싶었다. 그리고 그 현실 속에서 순차적으로 발전해갈 수 있는 방안들을 고민하였다.
Abstract
On March 31, 2020, the Cultural Heritage Administration submitted an application for registration of ‘Talchum, Mask Dance Drama in the Republic of Korea’ as a UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. And on November 1, 2022, it was judged as ‘recommended for inscription’ by the Evaluation Body under the UNESCO Intangible Heritage Committee. The results are now awaiting the results of the 17th Intergovernmental Committee on the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage to be held in Rabat, Morocco from 28 November to 3 December. Through this listing, international and domestic interest in ‘Talchum, Mask Dance Drama in the Republic of Korea’ will surely rise. Culture can be created by people and maintained by people, and the interest of those who enjoy the culture is the fuel for its continuation. In that respect, this listing is expected to be an opportunity to grow the sustainability of that culture to the next level. The institution that worked most centrally in the process of this listing was IMACO. And this institution is not limited to the role of the secretariat for registration promotion, but it is an institution that builds a network for the exchange and promotion of international mask culture and archives mask culture materials. This article shared the case of IMACO’s archive project. Archive is a very important work for ‘International Mask culture’, and it is questionable whether it meets our expectations. And you can criticize. However, there is also an aspect that is understandable when considering the context of reality. This article is not intended to suggest an ideal way to build an archive, but to reveal reality. And I thought about ways to develop sequentially in that reality.
