Abstract

This study investigates the evolution of defense systems and borders between Baekje and Silla in the mid-to-upper Geumgang River basin using archaeological typology and GIS spatial analysis. Analysis of wall construction identified distinct Silla (Types 1·2a·2b) and Baekje (Types 3a·3b·5) styles, alongside a technological hybrid (Type 4) unique to the borderland. Quantitative hierarchy analysis revealed that Silla maintained an “equalized hi- erarchy” of large-scale fortresses for high-intensity regional dominance, while Baekje initial- ly operated a “pyramidal hierarchy” of small-scale fortifications for low-cost efficiency. The border's transformation is reconstructed into four stages. Following Silla’s initial expansion into the Daejeon and Geumsan basins (Stages 1-2), Baekje reclaimed the Daejeon Basin during King Mu’s 7th-century counteroffensive (Stage 3). During this period, Baekje shifted to a “high-intensity occupation strategy” by constructing large-scale hubs like Wol- pyeongdongsanseong, while a defensive Silla retreated toward Okcheon, adopting a “delay strategy” centered on downsized fortifications. By Stage 4 (mid-7th century), Baekje’s con- tinued expansion pushed Silla’s network to the brink of collapse. Ultimately, these defense systems were not static structures but strategic products flexibly reorganized in response to shifting power dynamics and the spatial specificity of the borderland.
