본 연구는 현대도예의 다양한 장르 중 추상표현주의 도예 작품을 중심으로 그 조형적 특징과 미학적 가치를 탐구하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 최근 도예의 경향성은 단순한 공예적 기능을 넘어 조형적 실험과 예술적 개념을 확장하는 방향으로 발전해 왔으며, 특히 추상표현주의 도예는 조형적 자유와 감성적 표현을 극대화하는 특징을 보이고 있다. 본 연구를 통해 연구자는 이러한 추상표현주의 도예 작품이 내포하는 조형성과 표현성을 ‘주름’이라는 개념을 중심으로 분석하여 도예에서 일어나고 있는 이질적인 경향성에 대한 해석학적인 토대를 제공하고자 한다. 질 들뢰즈(Gilles Deleuze)의 철학을 토대로 주름은 단순한 표면적 요소를 넘어선 개념으로 파악될 수 있다. 주름은 물질과 비물질, 내부와 외부의 관계를 유동적으로 변화시키는 조형적 요소로서 생성과 변화를 의미하는 개념으로 확장될 수 있다. 이는 현대 조형예술 전반에서 중요한 조형 원리로 작용하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 들뢰즈의 주름 개념을 이론적 토대로 삼아, 주름이 추상표현주의 도예에서 어떻게 형상화되고 조형적 가능성을 확장하는지를 문헌 연구와 사례 분석을 통해 탐색하였다. 추상표현주의 도예의 주요 작가들의 작품을 분석함으로써 주름이 형태적 변형, 무한성의 현시, 점토의 매체적 특성과 유희성 등이 어떻게 연결되는지를 살펴보았다. 특히, 주름의 개념이 추상표현주의 도예에서 비정형적인 형태와 유희성을 강조하는 방식으로 구현된다는 점에 주목하였다. 주름은 흙이라는 유기적 재료와 작가의 직접적인 개입을 통해 유동적이고 비결정적인 형태로 나타나며, 이는 추상표현주의 도예가 지닌 독창성과 실험성을 극대화하는 요소로 작용한다. 이러한 연구를 통해 현대 도예에서 주름이 가지는 조형적 의미를 조명하고, 이를 기반으로 도예 예술에 대한 이론적인 해석의 기반을 모색하고자 한다. 본 연구는 현대 도예의 미학적 연구에 기여할 뿐만 아니라, 조형예술 전반에서 주름 개념을 보다 깊이 있게 이해하는 데 도움이 될 것이다.
Abstract
This study aims to explore the formative characteristics and aesthetic value of abstract expressionist ceramics within the diverse genres of contemporary ceramics. Recent trends in ceramics have evolved beyond mere utilitarian craftsmanship, emphasizing formal experimentation and the expansion of artistic concepts. In particular, abstract expressionist ceramics exhibit a tendency to maximize formal freedom and emotional expression. This study analyzes the formative and expressive aspects of such works through the concept of the "fold," thereby providing a hermeneutic foundation for the heterogeneous tendencies emerging in contemporary ceramics. Based on the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze, the fold extends beyond a surface element and serves as a formative principle that fluidly alters the relationships between material and immaterial, interior and exterior. It can also signify processes of becoming and transformation, acting as a key aesthetic concept in contemporary visual art. This study employs a theoretical framework grounded in Deleuze’s concept of the fold to investigate how it materializes in abstract expressionist ceramics and expands their formal possibilities through literature review and case analysis. By analyzing the works of key artists, this research examines how the fold relates to formal transformation, the manifestation of infinity, the material properties of clay, and playfulness. Particular attention is given to how the fold is expressed in amorphous, fluid, and indeterminate ceramic forms created through the organic nature of clay and direct artistic intervention. The fold ultimately enhances the originality and experimental nature of abstract expressionist ceramics. This study contributes to the aesthetic discourse of contemporary ceramics and offers a broader understanding of the fold as a conceptual framework within the field of visual arts.
