Abstract
This study examined the concept of counterfactual thinking in order to explain how ethical reflection works. In the relation between two concepts synchronizes, additive and upward counterfactual thinking for the past immoral life promote the present immoral life and motivate to pursue moral prescriptive behavior. While the subtractive and downward counterfactual thinking maintain the present moral life and motivate to prevent moral proscriptive behavior. Based on these findings, this study proposed to add 'taking alternative perspective to one’s past' as a moral function which embodies ethical reflection ability.
