초록
This paper aims to selectively examine the research trend of African American feminist literary criticism in the 19th century, focusing on the inequality and social structure created by class, race, gender, and sexuality. Above all, this article summarizes the theory of intersectionality as a theoretical background and analytical framework for the research and presents the intersectionality analysis as a tool for literary criticism. Examining the possibility that literature reveals cracks and contradictions in law and societal norms, this article advocates for the use of intersectionality as a tool to verbalize and politicize the multi-layered peripheral lives depicted in Black women’s literature from the 19th century. Specifically, Jacobs’ autobiography describes power relationships intertwined with specific moments in history and structures, and at the same time, has continuously testified to the personal and collective power to resist them. Examining Jacobs’s autobiography through an intersectional lens facilitates a comprehensive analysis of the multifaceted challenges faced by individuals and their capacity for resistance and subjectivity.
