Abstract

This study explored the process of change in early childhood teachers' beliefs and practices as they navigate between 'learning within play' and 'play within curriculum.' By analyzing reflective journals written by 35 in-service early childhood teachers who participated in a graduate course titled 'Children and Play,' this study examined how teachers recognize these tensions, seek balance, transform their beliefs, and move toward new practices. The findings revealed four stages. First, teachers experienced deep conflict and confusion between play and curriculum. Second, teachers actively sought balance through field practice and communication with colleagues and parents. Third, teachers experienced belief transformation through philosophical reflection, child observation, and peer learning. Fourth, teachers moved toward play-curriculum integrated practices. This study demonstrates that teachers' belief change occurs gradually through multi-layered pathways. The findings suggest that for successful implementation of play-based curriculum in the field, in-depth teacher learning support and activation of teacher learning communities are necessary.
