초록
This study casts light on the conflict between empirical philology and theoretical criticism in the history of Western literary studies by concentrating on the Feldman-Dowd dispute which took place in Beckett Studies in the 2000s. Feldman argues that the best way to increase scholarly knowledge about Beckett is via verifiable empirical evidence which allows a falsification process. Dowd questions the legitimacy of the direct application of scientific concept of falsification to literary studies; Feldman’s narrow view of authorship; and the supposed objectivity of empirical science. He also raises concern about the restrictions that his methodological standardization might incur for critical hermeneutics. Feldman’s dogmatic position is further troubled by Uhlmann’s observation of natural limits in the interpretative methods of falsifiability related to empirical evidence. Van Hulle offers a reconciliation between philological empiricism and theoretical interpretation by classifying between exogenetics and endogenetics, as does Wittgenstein by distinguishing between cause and reason.
