초록
Dominated by Modernism and Postmodernism in the history of Western literature, a large number of studies on Samuel Beckett’s Endgame have mainly focused on either the absurd mode of human existence in modern world or the sarcastic aspects of modern lives disregarding the enrichment of Biblical allusions in the work. Even though researchers of “literature and religion” have hesitated to figure out some religious meanings of literary works overpowered by “High Theory,” such literary critics of Neo-Marxism as Theodore W. Adorno, Gilles Deleuze, and Alain Badiou have demonstrated new interpretations on Beckett’s literary world based on their ideas of “negativity,” “rhizome,” and “le generigue.” Therefore, it is strongly needed to recognize Beckett’s strategy of using “negative traits” which do not necessarily mean negative meanings all the time. “Negative traits” in Endgame illumine the possibility of the eschatological vision of parousia propelled by the enrichment of Biblical allusions.
