Abstract

This study focuses on the poems on the eight scenes of the Geum-river area. We collect the related works spread across different literature and study the poems’ artistry and position in Korean poetry. Through such work, we hope to expand the scope of traditional Sino-Korean literature research and intesify area studies, which has recently risen as an academic trend. Up to this point, we have identified 260 poems by 51 authors. Considering the characteristics of these works, it is highly likely that new works are discovered in the future. The region with the most poems on eight scenes is Buyeo. There are 19 regions in which only the title for the eight scenes was decided upon without constructing poetry for them. The first of the poems on the eight scenes around the Geum-river area is Han-san-pal-gyeong (韓山八景) by Yi Saek (李穡, 1328~1396), who is a great literary from the late Goryeo period. The most recent work regarding it is Shin-Buyeo-pal-gyeong (新扶餘八景) by Yoon Jaehwan (尹財煥) and Lee Kyuchoon (李圭椿) in 2022, which extends the literary tradition to over 700 years. It is difficult to find a creative tradition in which such acts of Sino-Korean poetry is maintained for the same object in the same region. The poems on the eight scenes of the Geum-river area has changed since the 20th century. While the poems were initially written independently by single authors, they were later collaboratively written by multiple authors. Furthermore, while the initial focus of the poems was the natural landscapes and objects around the Geum-river, several recent poems have included modern buildings and lifestyles in the poems on the eight scenes. This shows an expansion of the boundaries of the poems on eight scenes. We hope that the research on the poems on the eight scenes of the Geum-river area will aid the progression of area studies. In addition, the study may be useful as travel information, education for young adults, and provision of resting spots for the elderly.
