Abstract
Founded in 1993, Vía Campesina is a global farmers' organisation that advocates for the restoration of the rights of small-scale farmers, as well as the ecological environment that have been marginalised and excluded in the development of a modernised and globalised food regime. In particular, since the second half of the 20th century, various farmers from all over the world have joined the Vía Campesina's advocacy for the restoration of the ‘peasant life’ because they have witnessed and experienced the irreparable destruction of their lives due to the globalisation of the food production system. This study analyses the dilemma faced by Altiplano farmers who have attempted to restore the 'Vía Campesina' in the traditional agricultural region of Bolivia, the altiplano, as quinoa, a subsistence crop traditionally produced for self-consumption, is being converted into a commercial crop. In other words, the globalised food system has been treated as a major factor that negatively affects the maintenance of peasants' livelihoods, and the study will discuss how the newly created opportunity structure under the globalised food system affects the recovery of peasants' life and what are the dilemmas in the process.
