<그리스도 최후의 유혹>과 <패션 오브 크라이스트>에 나타난 기독교 비평장(場) 연구 : 복음서 재현에 관한 논의를 중심으로

본고는 2000년대 국내 개봉한 두 편의 ‘예수-이야기’ 영화를 둘러싼 기독교계 평자들의 비평장을 분석한다. 논의의 대상으로 삼은 영화 중 <패션 오브 크라이스트>는 유력한 교계 단체와 상당수의 교회로부터 지지를 받은 ‘복음서 재현 영화’이고 <예수의 마지막 유혹>은 다양한 형태의 상영 저지 운동에 시달린 ‘복음서 변용 영화’다. 주목할 것은, 현실 층위에서 두 영화에 대해 행해진다소 일방적인 평가와 상관없이, 많은 기독교계 전문 평자들이 다양한 시각을 수용하는 공론화의장을 모색하고 있었다는 점이다. 그들은 영화 매체에 대한 이해와 신학적인 식견을 바탕으로 비기독교인들과 영화를 도구로만 이해하는 기독교인들에게 새로운 독해 방식을 제시하고 있었다. 특히 ‘예수-이야기’ 영화를 바라보는 교회의 편협한 관점과 극단적인 실천에 대해 자기반성의 시선을 보여주는 글들이 눈에 띄었다. 상당수의 글들은 문화적 텍스트로서 ‘예수-이야기’ 영화가 성서의 영화로의 확장, 혹은 복음서 내용의 실증적 각색일 필요가 없다는 데 동의하고 있었다. 영화매체 자체의 미적 자율성을 인지하고 ‘예수-이야기’ 영화를 예술적․역사적․문학적 차원에서 중층적으로 접근해 가야한다는 의견도 존재했다. 축자영감의 영화적 적용을 강제하는 듯한 근본주의적 태도나 영화를 도구적으로만 활용하려는자세는 장기적으로 기독교 영화의 범주를 축소시킬 것이다. 또한 ‘예수-이야기’ 영화를 포함한 기독교 영화가 비기독교인들과의 대화의 장에서 논의될 수 있을 때, 영화의 복음적 효용은 더욱 확대될 것이다. 2000년대 들어, ‘예수-이야기’ 영화에 대한 기독교계 비평은 복음서 재현에의 강요를 서서히 지양해 가고 있는 것으로 보인다. 기독교 영화의 역할과 기능을 쇄신해 가기 위해서라도, 다양한 입장 차를 지닌 교계 안팎의 평자들이 함께 대안을 모색하는 비평 공간이 늘어가길기대한다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the sphere of criticism of Christian critics surrounding two ‘Jesus-story’ films domestically released in 2000s. Among the films under discussion, The Passion of the Christ is ‘gospel represented film’drawing supports from leading religious organizations and many churches,and The Last Temptation Of Christ is ‘gospel transfigured film’ suffered in various kinds of boycott. What is remarkable, regardless of assessment somewhat unilateral performed about two films in real level, is that many Christian professional critics were seeking the forum of publicization that can embrace various views. They were suggesting new ways of reading based on understanding about film media and theological insight to non-Christians, or Christians who understands films as a tool. The articles showing eyes of introspection about the church's insular view watching ‘Jesus-story’ film and extreme practice stood out especially. Many articles were agreeing that ‘Jesus-story’ film as a cultural text need not to be an extension of the Bible to films, or an empirical dramatization of gospel's contents. There were also an opinion to recognize aesthetic autonomy of film media itself and should approach in multi-layered ways to ‘Jesus-story’film in artistic․historic․literary levels. Fundamentalistic attitude that appears to be enforcing cinematic application of verbal inspiration or posture only trying to use films instrumentally will reduce the category of Christian films in long term. Also when Christian films including ‘Jesus-story’ films can be discussed with non-Christians in conversation forum, evangelical use of the film will increasingly expand. In the period of 2000s, Christian criticism of ‘Jesus-story’ films seems to be slowly sublating the pressure of representing gospels. For renovating the role and function of Christian films, the increasing of space for criticism where critics having various differences from inside and outside of the religious world seeking alternatives is expected.
