예수 드라마의 극적 사실주의에 관한 미학적 고찰 - <마태복음>과 <패션 오브 크라이스트>를 중심으로 -

본 논문은 <마태복음>(1964)과 <패션 오브 크라이스트>(2004) 두 편의 영화를 사실주의 ‘드라마’의 관점에서 비교 분석하여, 예수 드라마에 대한 미학적 분석의 틀을 제공하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 그간 예수 드라마의 평가는 복음서의 충실한 재현 여부와 그에 따른 신학적-윤리적 유용성을 근거로 그 가치가 결정되는 경향이 강했다. 그러나 예수 드라마는 그 매체의 특성상, 원전의 수동적인 이식이 아닌 감독/작가의 창의적 중재와 예술적 실현의 결과이며, 이에 대한 정확한 이해는 신학과 드라마 간의 간극을 극복하고 복음서 원전의 사유와 해석에 대한 드라마의 생산적인 기여를 가능하게 할 것이다. 한 편의 드라마는 창작자가 속한 사회적 맥락과 개인적인 메타텍스트, 그리고 그가 선택한 표현 양식과 그에 따른 극적 내러티브의 구성, 그리고 시공간적인 미장센을 통해 태어난다. 본론에서 분석한 바와 같이 <마태복음>과 <패션>은 둘 다 극적 사실주의에 기반하여 예수에 대한 극적인 ‘모방’ 곧 재현을 시도했지만 창작자의 해석의 관점에 따라 전자는 신사실주의(Neo-Realism)적인 표현양식을 통해 현대의 혁명가 예수를, 후자는 극사실주의(Hyper-Realism)를 통해 역사 속의 고통 받는 예수를 그려낸다. 사실주의 내에서 조차 일어나는 이와 같은 창의적 표현 양식의 변용(變容)과 상이한 해석은 극적 표현 양식의 다양성과 생명력을 보여주는 동시에, 영화 대 신학의 이분법적인 접근으로는 예수 드라마들의 풍부한 창의적 담론들을 온전히 담아낼 수 없음을 예증해준다. 본고는 신학의 관점에서 바라본 예수 드라마의 당위성이 아닌, 각 드라마가 성취하고자 한 미학적 목표를 되짚어 가며 각 드라마에 담긴 창의적이고 논리적인 내러티브의 구조를 조망하여 그 독립적인 예술적 가치를 조망하였고, 이를 통해 데리다의 ‘부록(supplement)'으로서 복음서 원전의 의미를 더욱 충만하게 되살려주는 기여를 할 수 있음을 결론으로 제시한다. 하나의 부록이 있다는 것은 이전 부록의 불완전성을 입증하는 동시에 자신의 불완전성에 개입해 줄 다음 부록이 따라올 것이라는 전제를 달고 있듯이, 일면 단일한 해석의 층위를 전제로 하는 예수의 드라마들은 끊임없이 새롭게 등장하여 극적인 사유들을 통해 새로운 시대와 공동체에 말을 걸며 원전의 충만성을 더해주는 것이다.
Abstract
This study aims to provide a basis for an aesthetic analysis of Jesus drama by comparative examination of Matteo and The Passion. So far, a value of Jesus drama has traditionally been determined by whether it has faithfully represents the Gospels, and therefore, by theological and ethical standards. Jesus drama, however, is not a passive or transparent translation of the original text, but a total realization of director's creative mediation and artistic vision through its own medium. Therefore, an accurate understanding of such characteristics of drama will certainly help to overcome the gap between theology and drama, and even contribute to more fruitful reflection and interpretation of the original text through dramatic renderings. A drama comes into existence through concretization of director's metatext, a social context he/she belongs to, a style of expression he/she chooses, composition of dramatic narrative, and the final realization of mise en scène. As the main body of the study demonstrates, both dramas attempt to 'imitate' or re-enact Jesus through dramatic realism, but with different purposes and results. Pasolini creates a modern revolutionist Jesus through Neo-Realism, while Gibson, a suffering servant Jesus through Hyper-Realism. These variations of creative expressions and different interpretations even within the same frame of realism not only show a variety and vitality of dramatic medium but also testify that those dichotomic approaches hardly appreciate creative discourses produced by the body of Jesus drama. This study views each Jesus drama not as it should be from the theological point of view, but as it is, as it aims to achieve its goals on its own terms. The autonomous artistic value of each Jesus drama can be made even clearer when one understands its contributions as Derridaean concept of ‘supplement.’ The presence of one supplement proves incompleteness of the previous one and at the same time preconditions another supplement to follow to complement its own imperfect nature. Likewise, supplements of Jesus drama with their own unique interpretations incessantly emerge to add up to fullness of the Gospels by dramatic mediations, which will continue to converse with ever-changing ages and communities of mankind.
