Abstract

This study explores the structural transformation of Isao Takahata’s animated film The Tale of the Princess Kaguya in comparison with its source text, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter (Taketori Monogatari). The film reinterprets the original’s mythical framework through deliberate omission, addition, and rearrangement. In the “Birth and Growth” sequence, Takahata replaces the brief divine origin with detailed depictions of childhood, seasons, and human interaction, grounding the story in lived experience. In the “Five Difficult Tasks,” satire gives way to emotional confrontation, while the “Emperor’s Courtship” eliminates the motif of the elixir and redefines the Emperor as a figure of human obsession. Finally, in the “Ascension,” Buddhist salvation and transcendence are replaced by new emotional scenes—the reunion with Sutemaru, a farewell song, and the moon procession. Kaguya’s ascent becomes not liberation but the memory of life itself. Through these structural changes, Takahata transforms a tale of enlightenment into a lyrical meditation on humanity, freedom, and the enduring will to live.
