Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the coupling phenomena in returns and volatilities from US(global effect), Korea, China, and Japan(local effect) in stock markets to ASEAN. Summarizing this study, first, all of 9 markets showed the bidirectional conditional mean spillover effects in the conditional mean equation prior to the crisis. Influence of Malaysian market itself was the greatest. The biggest mean spillover effect was indicated from Malaysian to Chinese markets. In the conditional variance equation, none of own markets showed the positive conditional volatility spillover effect. The residual impact in US market indicated the biggest conditional volatility spillover effect, which influences the volatility of Korean market. In most of their own markets, two effects didn't exist. Accordingly, after US subprime crisis, mainly foreigners took the heavy trading due to the realization of arbitrage, the security of liquidity, and the contraction in investment psychology. Thus, US market had influence upon volatility in Korean, thereby having indicated the highest conditional volatility spillover effects. However, leverage effect or asymmetric effect didn't exist in most of markets. In this study, it could be confirmed that the spillovers were reinforced in Korean stock market with overseas, and that even the coupling phenomena among the whole world's stock markets was deepened.
