Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the potential transmission of volatility between Korean and ASEAN stock markets using APARCH model from Jan. 2002 to Sept. 2010. As a result, Malaysian stock market had the highest mean spillover effect of all stock markets in conditional mean equation through total, before and during crisis; Philippine stock market had the highest mean spillover effect of all markets after crisis; the highest mean spillover effect between two regional stock markets varied depending on different periods: the mean spillover effect reached its highest from Malaysian to Indonesian stock market through total and before crisis, from Malaysian to Thai during crisis, and from Malaysian to Singaporean after crisis respectively. In addition, expected rate of returns was significantly correlated with conditional volatility in Korean market through total period, in Singaporean before crisis, and in Malaysian during crisis. According to conditional variance equation, the highest spillover effect of volatility appeared in Korean market through total and before crisis. In interregional spillover effect of volatility, the volatility of Korean stock market had significant impact on that of Indonesian through total period; the volatility of Philippine had significant impact on that of Indonesian before crisis; the volatility of Thai had significant impact on that of Philippine during crisis; and the volatility of Malaysian had significant impact on that of Philippine after crisis. That is, the spillover effect of volatility reached its highest between respective two regional stock markets depending on different periods. Except regional stock markets after crisis, size effect, leverage effect and asymmetric effect existed in other markets depending on different periods. Except the post-crisis, the highest asymmetric effect was found in Philippine stock market throughout the total period, in Singaporean before the crisis, and in Malaysian during crisis, while the highest persistence of volatility was found in Singaporean through total period, in Philippine before crisis, in Malaysian during crisis, and in Singaporean after crisis. Therefore, this study showed that spillover effect, volatility, size effect, leverage effect and asymmetric effect worked between Korean and ASEAN stock markets depending on different periods, and that the high asymmetry and persistence of volatility found in these markets indicated the transmission of volatility between markets.
