Abstract
Most literature on film genre begins by discussing the academic definition of individual genres and the impossibility of categorization. This is because the genre cycle from formation to decline is directly influenced by technological, economic, aesthetic, and social changes in film. Based on this basic discussion of film genre, this study examines the power of discontinuity and irrationality manifested by comedy, namely, cinematic imagination and the ideological struggle of reality, within the ‘youth generation’ and ‘use of comedy’ reproduced by Korean cinema. Youth generation characters in Korean films are always awkward and immature in the face of given reality, reality that must be overcome, and reality that must be (re)set. Their ‘immaturity’ is a perfect material for the comedy genre. This is because immaturity is a necessary and sufficient condition for the Bômolochus, that is, the jester, to bring about the establishment of comedy. The scope (subject/object of caricature) and depth (purpose of caricature) of the jester's role are subdivided according to the nature of the play. At this time, the play determines its aesthetic and social form and character based on the audience's reaction, including the audience, and the contemporary atmosphere and public reaction. Therefore, the dynamics of the youth generation and comedy in Korean cinema are proven in its value within the genealogy of the development and decline, and extinction and reproduction of genre forms in socio-cultural history. Accordingly, this study begins by briefly outlining the genealogy of youth and comedy in Korean cinema. Following this, in the context of intensifying neoliberal competition since the 2010s, this study explores the potential for humor suggested by changes in the representation of youth generation and the use of comedy in Korean cinema, drawing on films. Furthermore, arguing that from “The King of Jokgu” (2014) and “Alice in Earnestland” (2015) untill “Dream” (2023) employs cinematic self-parody within its genre-blended narrative, this study estimate a new paradigm of Korean cinema amidst changes in viewing methods due to the diversification of video media such as online streaming and OTT in the 2020s.
