Abstract
In contemporary Korean cinema, the depiction of youth has shifted significantly over the decades. During the 2000s, youth narratives transitioned from mainstream commercial films to becoming central themes in independent films that focus on marginalization and poverty. This shift reflects the deteriorating socio-economic conditions faced by young people, rendering their stories less commercially appealing. Around 2020, Korean independent films began to explore youth poverty not merely as a material condition but as a narrative framework that imbues cinematic coherence and genre formation. These films often portray young individuals navigating isolation and marginalization while expressing a yearning for recovery through subtle connections or moments of joy in trivial pursuits. Narratives include characters who embrace isolation yet seek reconciliation or those who find humor and solace in mundane actions, reflecting a hopeful yet precarious image of youth. Additionally, innovative storytelling formats such as internet streaming platforms highlight the aspirations and struggles of impoverished youth, while other narratives expose the criminalization of basic survival efforts like securing shelter. By interpreting poverty through these nuanced lenses, contemporary independent films construct a genre that encapsulates the realities of youth poverty in Korea today, offering both a critique of societal structures and a reflection of generational despair. This evolution marks the emergence of a distinct “youth film” genre within Korean independent cinema.
